What is life insurance?

What is critical illness insurance?
Critical illness cover is additional cover you can take with life insurance or as a standalone benefit and is sometimes referred to as serious illness cover.
Critical illness cover will pay out the policy sum assured on diagnosis of a listed critical illness; this will vary from insurer to insurer. They key point here is that it pays out on diagnosed of a listed illness and not death or that death is likely to occur within a certain period. Insurers generally cover between 41 and 66 illness, most common are heart attack, stroke and cancer. People can make a full recovery and the critical illness benefit will be retained by the claimant.
What’s the difference between life insurance and mortgage life insurance?
There is no real difference between the two, everyone has an insurable interest to insurer their own lives for as much as they want and can afford. The key here is to establish the amount of cover required, for example a mortgage balance, cover for lost income, lump sums to provide the family with stability of a period and/or funeral cover.
